     With the construction, at the turn of the century, of such major cultural institutions as the Saint-Denis Theatre and what was to become the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec, the Quartier latin became the cultural centre of Montréal.
     The district's calling as the city's cultural hub crystallized in the early 1960s with the opening of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and the Collège du Vieux-Montréal. The Cinémathèque québécoise and the National Film Board, with their fabulous wealth of cinematic images, soon followed, as did the Galerie de l'UQAM, prime exhibition space for the contemporary art of up-and-coming artists from all over the world.
     This is where important cultural trends continue to emerge, where dance, theatre, the visual arts and music have been redefined, made new, more exciting in one or another of its many venues. The Quartier latin is still where you can catch a great show, see an offbeat exhibit or a limited-run movie. Afterwards, there's always a stimulating discussion going on in any of the trendy bistros and bars along Saint-Denis and Ontario Streets. This is also where students tend to set the style, and savvy bargain hunters are sure to make quirky and unusual finds at incredibly affordable prices.
